100 Word Challenge
This week we will officially participate in the 100 word challenge.
As you know, the Olympic Games have started over in Rio. We will use this great festival of sport for our prompt this week.
…I could see the finish line, then…
This line just needs to be used somewhere in your 100 words.
Things to consider:
- Which sport is this?
- What might be going to happen?
- How do you feel?
Miss van de Ven will show you how to enter the offical competition later this week.

Connecting the globe
Key Ideas
- We are connected to people around the world through the things we consume.
-Different countries produce different products.
Import- to bring from a foreign or external source; especially - as a merchandise- into a place or country from another country.
Export- - to carry or send- as a commodity- to some other place, such as another country.
Food Miles- where does my food come from?
LOI 2: Ways in which trade makes us interdependent.
How reliant are Kiwis on other countries in order to make a delicious Hawaiian Pizza?
Take a look at the ingredients below for a Hawaiian pizza. Use Google to calculate the food miles that were required to bring them to NZ.
Search "miles from Kansas, USA to NZ"
Ingredients in a Hawaiian pizza:
Flour (from Kansas, USA) ___________miles
Tomatoes (from Naples, Italy) ___________miles
Pineapples (from Alajuela, Costa Rica) ___________miles
Ham (Copenhagen, Denmark) ___________miles
Black pepper (Mumbai, India) ___________miles
Mozzarella cheese (Salerno, Italy) ___________miles
Total food miles for Hawaiian pizza ___________miles
Convert the total distance in miles to kilometres
Total food kilometres for Hawaiian pizza ___________ kilometres
Choose a different meal and complete the same task.
- Make a list of the ingredients used to make the meal.
- Research where each ingredient comes from.
- Calculate the food miles that are required to bring them to NZ.

Interdependence
The Challenge.
1. Summarise what happened during the task.
Things to think about:
-How was the class reliant on one another to complete the challenge successfully?
-What happened when a member of the team acted independently/caused a distraction/didn't listen/stopped performing their role?
How did you feel?
What did you do about it?
How did it affect the team achieving the common goal?
